HomeAid Houston - Helping to build transitional shelters for the homeless in Houston

HomeAid Team Volunteers Time
For Day Of Caring

HomeAid Houston, Bank of America and United Way of Greater Houston were a formidable team of volunteers that painted five apartments, three offices and a public restroom at Santa Maria's Bonita House on October 29. The project called "Home away from Home" was a Day of Caring Project, a United Way volunteer based program.

HomeAid Houston, a 501 c 3 charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) led the team with the help of HomeAid board members Leslie King and Tony Boilek, HomeAid staff, Bette Moser, Judith Drummond and Lea Pipitone. Sherwin Williams provided supplies at a discount and Warrior Painting provided paint assistance.

With more than 60 volunteers from Bank of America and HomeAid onboard, the Day of Caring was a success. The painting project was completed and volunteers also joined Santa Maria residents in creating Halloween decorations for the home and shared basic financial skills through an instructional course.

"We are honored to be a part of the program," said Bette Moser, executive director of HomeAid Houston. "We are also excited about the opportunity to work side by side with the many volunteers Bank of America is committing to the Santa Maria painting project. This donation is another reflection of the company's generosity and vision."

SANTA MARIA HOSTEL

Santa Maria is committed to providing services for women and their children in crisis. It is also the largest multi-site substance abuse treatment center serving both women and their children in the state of Texas. Santa Maria's Bonita House includes eight buildings with 60 apartment units and two 16-bed dormitories for women and children who are facing homelessness.

HOMEAID HOUSTON

HomeAid Houston identifies long term, stable homeless care providers who need additional capacity and pairs them with GHBA builders, vendors and suppliers who donate their time, materials and labor to help build transitional homeless shelters. HomeAid Care projects, such as the Day of Caring program are smaller undertakings that can range from $10,000 to $20,000 and can be accomplished in days or several weeks.

UNITED WAY'S DAY OF CARING

Days of Caring projects give volunteers a first-hand view of how the United Way is making the community stronger. Throughout the year-long initiative at least 8000 volunteers will share their time and talents on projects at United Way of Greater Houston affiliated organizations such as HomeAid and Bank of America.
